Metal and EDM: not something you typically see walk hand in hand. The two genres very rarely "mesh" well. Finnish industrial metal band KING SATAN attempts to marry the two musical styles and have their most recent stab at that with "King Fucking Satan", released via Saturnal Records on May 26th.
King Satan was created in 2015 by KING ALEISTER SATAN, who is the vocalist and main instrumentalist of the band. The music is a combination of dark, EDM and hard goth rock, with elements of black and death metal. The band released it’s first single titled ”Enter Black Fire” in December 2015 which was followed by demo EP ”We Are King Satan And We Fuck The World”. The album first came available in digital form and in January 2016 as a CD edition which was sold out very fast during the coming weeks due to widespread attention not only in native Finland but also aboard. The second single ”Psygnosis” was released in May 2016 when the the band announced the signing to Finnish record label SATURNAL RECORDS and started working on a debut full-length album at BLACKVOX STUDIO.
Now, let me start off by saying that in terms of this specific genre is not one I ever indulge in. I'm not a personal fan of EDM, so incorporating that with metal is not something I entirely embrace. I'm also not a fan of the whole "hail Satan" mantra associated with the black metal culture. Not because i don't agree with the Satanic religion... I just feel like a lot of times it is done in an attempt to be edgy, and quite frankly, it's cringe worthy to say the least. So when these two elements combine, I am almost setting myself up for failure when trying to deliver an objective review. But I pride myself in offering non-biased views on the various metal sub-genre, and although I may not enjoy it personally, it shouldn't deter me from presenting an objective opinion. All that being said, King Satan offers an interesting, unique sound with their ten track release, "King Fucking Satan".
The album title is absolutely top tier cringe. Underneath the title reads "Fuck the rest, Satan is best". I don't care how much of a devout satanist you claim to be, this just hurts to read. The image portrayed by the band, namely King Aleistar Satan himself, seems like a direct ripoff of King Diamond/Mercyful Fate. While the two musical styles have no relation to one another, I feel like the imagery could have been taken in a different direction. Musically, it brings the upbeat, bouncy, erratic electronic rhythms indicative of EDM. Lyrically, it's essentially a middle finger to hypocritical ideology, both in and out of the music industry. King Aleistar Satan himself has said about the album, "It is also a raw expression of untamed emotions, frustration and mixed thoughts and also simply an unleash of steams in the form of industrial, metal and rock’n’roll spirit which bows to nothing or no one!" It seems he certainly lives up to this mantra.
The production quality of the album leaves little to be desired. It's professionally mixed and mastered, so that is counted as a positive factor. Some bands don't invest too much in the final product of their sound, and it makes their material sound horrible. King Satan didn't cut corners on this aspect at all. If I had to pick a song that stood out to me, I'd have to go with the song " Of Internal, Eternal & Spiritual War", which is a slower, less erratic track from the rest of the album.
King Fucking Satan breaks out of the typical genre match up game by combining the least likely genre's together to offer a unique listening experience. EDM fans will most likely enjoy it, although the majority of metal fans may find it a bit odd.
